In the summer of 1957, my granddad took his family on a camping trip to Colorado. He filmed it on 8mm and I recently restored the reel at the home studio. Take a trip back to The Fifties - link to video in bio.

Next time we visit Big Bend National Park, we’re paddling through Santa Elena Canyon on the Rio Grande. What dramatic beauty. This section here, along the hiking trail, can be paddled both down and upstream with flow rates under 200 cfs - known as a “boomerang” trip. Alas, we were only here for two days - could have used two weeks.

Big Bend National Park is famous for its expansive mountain views, but to catch the Chihuahuan Desert in early spring is a special time to witness all the beauty in the details.

There’s Uncle Rusty and Uncle John on a deer hunting trip in East Texas, November 1964. It’s one of many slides I finished restoring. They show a bygone era when hunting was an important cultural value. Link in bio.

These are a few stills from the first slot canyon Chels and I hiked through. This was one of many day trips we took during our honeymoon in southern Utah. Such austere, mysterious landscapes - a photographer’s wonderland - can’t wait to visit again. Video is in the oven.

This is an 8mm film from November 1957. My granddad John Lester Yates Jr. documented a deer hunting trip he took in Central Texas near Austin. You’ll see plenty of white-tailed deer and wild turkey. Link in bio.
